Helsby Golf Club have only been members of the Manchester Alliance for three years but they made an early mark in an Alliance ‘major’ by winning the City Glass Men’s Foursomes final at Blackburn Golf Club.
Helsby and their final opponents, Sale Golf Club, had battled through to the final through six rounds from an entry of over 100 clubs and they provided a real thriller before Helsby triumphed by 4.5-3.5.
The game hinged on the match involving Jamie Hodgkinson and Chris Stott which went to the second extra hole before Helsby secured victory. In scenes reminiscent of the final day of the Ryder Cup all team members, plus spectators and officials following on the fairway and around the green to see the Helsby duo made a crucial par four on the difficult second hole to set off the celebrations.
Team Captain Brian Stott said: “I am proud of the team, the camaraderie and support for each other as they have put Helsby on the golfing map and we will be delighted to host the 2016 final.”
