One of the oldest competitions at Helsby is the Jack Speed trophy open to all Gentlemen members aged 55 and over. The competition is traditionally played on a Friday on the Yellow course.
2016 saw 68 members competing for the title in good conditions. Ken Bewely set the early pace posting an impressive 89 – 22 = 67 with his birdie at 12 the highlight of a round that ensured a runner up place. A CSS of 70 was calculated with only 4 competitors managing to break Par. 3rd placed Jim McAllister shot a 68 despite his double, triple bogey finish edging David P Fletcher who unfortunately finished double double for a 69 into 4th place.
Even with stronger finishes in reality no one could have touched the brilliance of the Winner Tom Briscoes 75 – 10 = 65 round. Briscoe went out in 37 shots, returning in 38 shots. Briscoe took a share of the ball pool with his birdie 2 at 8 before steadying himself on the 18th tee to post par after boarding the bogey train at 15, 16 and 17. Along with the trophy and name on the honours board Briscoe also gets back down to single figures thanks to his 1.0 handicap reduction.
