The European Tour in conjunction with the Austalasian Tour have just announced a new style tournament named ‘The world super 6 Perth’. The European Tour may not have the prestige of its American counterpart but is at least addressing the declining numbers of viewers and the perception that Golf is a boring sport.
The new format could be considered barmy but has been well received among professionals and will certainly be watched by Golf fans at least out of curiosity.
The event will be played at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club in Perth Australia and is a four day event. the first 3 days will be the normal 54 hole stroke play format, with the twist happening on the final day. The top 24 players will play in a match-play knockout over ‘6’ holes, if players are tied after the 6 they will face a playoff on a separate 100 Yard par 3. If they are tied again after this then they will contest a nearest the pin challenge to decide the match winner.
Although we have seen some changes in professional golf tournaments over the Years such as Power Golf but the timing was wrong and the format never caught on. With the success Cricket and Rugby are having with shorter formats this is surely the right time for Golf to find its own format that holds the spectators interest and entices new ones to tune in.
