The 4BBB Ernie Lloyd trophy is the only pairs board competition aside from the knockout matchplay formats. This competition gives competitors a nice break after the long medal / stableford singles season.
And so to this Year played in lovely late summer sun, with rolling fairways and receptive greens low scoring was expected. One of a host of tasty looking pairings Alan Rigby and Mark Poland managed only to post a McDonalds 99p saver score of 33 points. Jeff Hughes and Denver Brazier were many peoples favourites going into the day, however a level par 36 points saw them middle of the pack. Club Captain Steve Cunniffe invited Captains weekend winner Simon Begley to partner him and both combined well for a respectable 38 points. John and James Sowerby had a steady day with a top 6 finish after posting 39 points, while Peter and Ben Simpson went one better with 40 points and a top 5 place. Captain elect elect Graham Poland partnered with the ever steady Noel Robertson took top of the 40 pointers with a strong back nine.
However 40 points was well off the pace set by the 44 pointers, and a 4 way CPO. Dream team Andy Sayers and Mal Aird claimed 3rd spot over Jim Thomas and Simon Ness but beaten into second by the solid partnership of Sean Hogarty and David Harries. King of the castle and claiming the 2016 title were Carl Robinson and Jim Lynskey who turned their solid front nine into a terrific back nine and a place on the Helsby Honours board.
