A return to the Summer tees and the start of qualification golf was a sobering experience for todays field following the endless Winter season.
Last Years winner, Lee Horton, accompanied the Captain for his title defence. After starting strongly on the front 9 with a 20 point return Horton was unable to match on the back and completed a respectable 33 point total, 9 short of last Years haul. Horton enjoyed the best of the conditions in the Afternoon where judging by the forecast, the winner would surely come from. Young gun Charlie Fletcher certainly enjoyed the favourable conditions. After capitalising on a 4 point gross eagle at 7 and 4 point net eagle at 13 Fletcher finished 3rd overall with a level par gross 40 point finish. Fletchers eagle was amazingly just one of 3 on a day when conditions elongated the course, with Simon Knight following in at 7 and Helsby Vet Doug Tate recording the magic bird at the 4th. However good Fletchers’s eagle was it wasn’t enough to beat morning starter and wet weather maestro, Mike Branigan. Mocking the saying, never start with a birdie Branigan started strong with 21 points on the front which he almost equaled on the back 9 to sign for 41 points overall and 2nd on CPO. Branigan would be agonisingly pipped on a back 3 CPO by another wet weather specialist, Paul Saxon. birdies at 8 and 11 and just two dropped shots meant Saxon signed for the second level par gross of the day, a 41 point stableford total, and the title of Partridge Cup 2017.
