Presidents Day – 2017

trophyA sunny day after last weeks washout gave competitors a welcome happy lift as the Summer season progresses.  The fine weather attracted the parasol brigade and the increase in random conversation to fill the time created by the slow pace of play.  The course played longer than conditions suggested but receptive greens increased the likelihood that scores were out there.

The morning half of the draw enjoyed a slightly cooler round which Ralph Ramsey clearly enjoyed posting a 65 nett despite a treble at 9.  Ramsey had regrouped to shoot two over gross on the back and set the score for the day.  Sam Long, making his welcome return, threatened Ramsey’s lead after a blistering 68 gross, 65 nett with 3 front nine birdies cancelling out 3 bogeys before a fine 2 under gross back nine which got him to 2nd on cpo.  Past Captain Steve Cunniffe will be ruing his bogey bogey finish 67 nett which saw him take 3rd spot.  So the mark was set early and hunted down in the afternoon by an on fire Peter Duffy.  Having turned in one over gross and negotiating the corner in level par Duffy secummed with three doubles to post a just outside 68.  Tommy Briscoe was also building a solid attack with his own one over gross front nine, although doubles at 14 and 15 saw his challenge end eventually signing for a 68 and a new handicap of 10.

Ramsey’s mark would stay the test of time and his name is now engraved forever on Helsbys winner boards.

Annodata Round 2 – Result

After being victorious in the first round Helsby faced Malkins Bank Golf Club on Friday 2nd of June at Malkins GC
Unfortunately as it was Friday Helsby endured a tortuous journey due to the Friday afternoon traffic and got there just in time to tee off. Once teeing off the rain was fairly heavy for the first 9 holes which again did not help matters but the team got on with things.

The result –

Jeff Hughes lost 1 down

Charlie Fletcher won 4&3

Mark Stonely lost 7&6

Ste Roberts lost 6&5

Simon Pay lost 2 down

Unfortunately Helsby lost 4 – 1 against Malkins Golf Club.

This was the first year Helsby entered the competition and I’m sure now the team will want to progress further in the competition next year.

Kings and Queens Comp -Results

On Friday night there was a slight wet but warm night that greeted over 50 players at Helsby for the first popular Golfer non Golfer event of the year. Usually called Kings and Queens the format is simple, Golfers play their shots until on the green where the non Golfers then put out. Now it’s the 5th year in a row now the event is ever growing in popularity and gives the WAGS, husbands and others an insight into our great game and why it is so damn addictive.
On the night the team of Tommy Briscoe and Gayle Egerton took home the spoils with 41-5=36 pipping Dean Letford and his partner Sammy Walker on a card play off on the back 6.

In the best putter competition (non golfers only obviously) Sue Roberts won with a great score golfers would love to have with 16 putts.

If anyone is interested in future events ask in the Pro Shop for more details of when and how to enter, highly recommended.

City Glass Foursomes 2017 – Round One

After getting through the prelimary round against Werneth Golf Club, Helsby set up at First round match against Bury Golf Club at Helsby.

The first game involved a new partnership of Jeff Hughes and Simon Pay due to absentee Denver Brazier. The new pairing dominated from the start and ran out 7 &5 winners to go 1 up. This new partnership may give Team captain Rigby something to think about in next team selection.

The second game involved winter league finalists Chris Davies and Ste Green. This pairing had a shaky start which saw them go 4 down early on however this partnership showed why they were winter league finalists and they showed true grit to comeback and win on the 18th.

The partnerships of Andy Sayers/Roger Horton and Mal Aird /Martyn Wood both lost their matches 2&1 and 1 down respectively, which came as a shock to everyone.

Game 5 involved another new partnership with the big hitter Mark Poland and the steady golfer Geoff Maher. This partnership looked fully in control coming down the last 6 5up however they stuttered over the line with a 2&1 win.

Brian Stott and John Sowerby another new partnership gave the team another victory winning 4&3. Brian Stott showing continuing good form over the last few weeks.

The final game involved the pairing of Adam Griffiths and Brian McNamara. This seemed to be an inspired selection again from Team Captain Rigby, with Kennedy and Letford having no outings since last victory , The Captain parachuted these two recent in form debutants at last minute, showing calm and collected play throughout to win at a canter 4&3

This gave Helsby a victory winning overall 5&2. Helsby now await the draw for the second round.
