Another Captains Weekend completed with tales to tell and the many utterances among others of, if only.
A mix of weather gave us wet and drizzly mornings clearing to sunny afternoons the downside of the brighter afternoons was the wind/ breeze arrived. Added to a still fiery course, super fast greens and sadistic pin placings it was a true challenge and reflected in the CSS being 72 on both days.
Captain Neil and his trusty group of Past Captains assisting as starters on the first day, saw all competitors off the first tee on Saturday, all hoping this was to be their year.
He was in attendance along with his good lady Ann to greet and commiserate with nibbles and drinks, to all competitors passing the Halfway House on second round Sunday. This on top of hosting the Captains Dinner on Saturday night and concluding with the prize presentation on Sunday night deserves an endurance prize.

First round was greeted with drizzly and breezy conditions with still fast running fairways and super fast greens with tricky pin placings and course set up at full length.
Result was a CSS of 72 reflecting toughness of course.
Off first at 7..30am our in form low man Jamie Hodgkinson set a formidable target of 72 gross 70 nett off his 2 Hcp, this despite a five foot nearest the pin on the sixth which rather than a cert birdie somehow ended up as a three putt bogey.
He leads the gross comp by two from our new scratch man Simon Pay who carded a 74 gross .
Scoring for the rest of the day reflected tough conditions with the lead being shared with last years winner Simon Begley posting a 68 nett off 14 Hcp and Paul Clarke with 68 nett off 16 Hcp.
Danger man John Cheesebrough posted a creditable nett 69 despite a double bogey five on the 18th.
Tomorrows second round is wide open with a ruck of contenders all within four shots and all to play for and the prospect of similar conditions wetting the appetite for a great day.

Closing with a bogey at 18 playing into a strong wind saw him complete the back nine 3 better nett and take the spoils.

Another day another stableford, this time around the prize was the Ward Trophy. Although happily out shined in recent years by his sons Howard Pay enjoyed the day and the format, despite a double triple run at 16 & 17, he posted a strong early 39 points. Defending champion Jeff Hughes couldn’t replicate last Years form but finished a respectable 32nd on the day.
The day was owned by Jaime Hodgkinson though. Despite a topsy turvey scoring Year Hodgkinson still nose how to get the job done. Faldo esc in scoring Hodgkinson recorded two birdies at 2 and 7 to turn in a conking 2 under gross. Hodgkinson had got his nose in front early making his remarkable back nine par at every hole seem like a walk in the park. Hodgkinson signed for a best of the day 41 points, a .5 handicap reduction and the Ward Trophy.
